First, i'd like to start by saying that i attempted to write this, directly, to the restaurant. Privately. But there is no link for that. Not a good sign when a place doesn't provide a channel for feedback. Maybe this place has gotten TOO popular…
Next, i'd like to say that i've eaten, either here or at the original site across the street, 100s of times… and have written a few glowing reviews, but…
tonite… was a disaster…
first, i made the mistake of going on father's day, not remembering it WAS father's day… so, at 5pm, when i got there, thinking i was early, the manager greets me at the door and asks if i have a reservation.
I don't like making reservations… hence, i usu go at 'off hours'… before or after 'the rush'.
I say 'no' and he explains that i can have a table for an hour.
No problem… i can eat, easily within 45 minutes.
ExCEPT… there's a time limit on ordering… so, a few times, i had to wait to order… and THEN, towards the end, they messed up my order… so when it DID come i was VERY rushed…
i'm sorry to say that it spoiled my meal…
you can't have it both ways. You want to give less time than usual, fine… no time restriction, then. Unless you just don't care about your customers, having gotten too popular… feel free to answer here, since i had to write this in public…

I'm really glad this place is so appreciated. The people are wonderful and the pizza is probably the best in town and I grew up in New York City when pizza was no less than great and plentiful. Now you'd be lucky to find a good slice anywhere in the old neighborhoods.
But 'O Sole Mio makes a fantastic thin crust pizza, it has personality rather than something forgetable that one just chews on and swallows and the sfeer is leuk/charming. I'll take this place to some pretentious, overpriced but nicely decorated restaurant with mediocre food anytime!
Highly suggested.

Surprisingly good chicken (kip) burritos... fair price and portion. There is no sfeer. It's totally afhalen. The people are nice, though. Too bad they're not open for lunches as well...

I'm surprised there's no reviews here... this is a little neighborhood eetcafe with a diverse menu... in years past they made a killer pasta bolognese, but i think that that cook is gone and so is how good that dish was. But i decided to try the ribs from there last night, oude jaar. I have read (i guess elsewhere) in recensies that the delivery wasn't all that dependable... but i live a short bike ride away so i order to take away (afhalen). The food was ready when they said it would be. Everything (except the stookbrood which i didn't care for anyways) was as ordered... fries were decent to good, bakje sla was standard and good. The ribs were ok when they were hot (warm) and, amazingly enough, better when they were colder. I expected to come back to a puddle of fat but that wasn't the case. And i could taste the meat better. Very nice sized portion as well... I have to say i was pleased and pleasantly surprised... next time i'll try the bolognese again... who knows?

Simpele plek, maar uitstekend eten.
En ook de eigenaar en zijn hulp zijn hele leuk kerels..

I've lived in leiden for 10 yrs now. One of my biggest complaints was that there was 'nowhere to eat'... Until tonight.
from the room's aesthetic quality till the last bite of dessert this restaurant, in all its well conceived details, does NOT disappoint.
I'm truly sorry for those reviewers who had a different experience... but EVERYone has an 'off night'. I'm guessing that if there were two bad reviews, one of them just had a quarrel with their mate. Because I'm guessing that 'off nights' HERE are a rarity.
The combination of flavors were delightfully balanced. Not loud, in any way... and EVERYthing on each plate was well tended to... always the sign of a top notch recipe.
I could not recommend this restaurant highly enough.
except to keep the crowds away so that i'll always be able to get a seat.
